Geography of Nagoya
Nagoya is a city located in the southern area of the main island Honshu in Japan. In Nagoya, they have a humid subtropical climate which means that during the winters it has a mild temperature. During the summer there is a humid climate. The average temperature for the summer season is in the low eighties. In rare occasions though the temperatures may reach up into the nineties. The highest recorded record in Nagoya since 2013 is 101°F. However in the winter, even though the winters are supposed to be mild due to the fact Nagoya is located in the humid subtropical climate zone, it reaches just at freezing temperatures at the lowest. The lowest recorded temperature in Nagoya since 2013 is 26°F. Since the temperatures in Nagoya does not have a drastic change throughout the seasons, there are not many effects on the crops.
Since the temperatures can reach freezing temperatures, there are a few snow days. On average there are only five days of snow in a year! There are quite more rain days on average, which is 96 days! Counting all of the rain days in the year of 2013, in total there was about 57.62 inches of rain. That is quite a lot of rain, almost five feet of the rain! This is due to the fact that there will be at least one day of rain in each month! In Nagoya, there is not a month with no rain at all! Since there is a lot of rain, the rain is usually harvested. This rainwater is harvested by having a system of gutters on top of the roof of a home that collects water underground in a rainwater reservoir. If you want to learn more about how these reservoirs work click here. Usually they harvest water to promote managing water shortages, control floods and store water in case of a natural disaster. Also due to the fact that there is a lot of rain, the soil is quite fertile, but most of the soil gets its nutrients from volcanoes that created Japan. This allows for good soil since the soil has the minerals from the minerals contained in the volcanic materials that the volcanoes produced. This makes sense since it is in a deciduous forest biome which you shall get to learn about in the next paragraph. Japan is mainly a deciduous forest biome, which also includes Nagoya. Although Nagoya is a city, the area around is a deciduous forest. Since Nagoya is a deciduous forest, there is up to 40 to 60 inches of rain a year which fits the average amount of rain Nagoya gets which is about 57 inches of rain.. Also in Nagoya, there are four distinct seasons since it is in the deciduous forest biome. For example, in the spring time, that is when the leaves start to grow back. So during the summer it is quite warm and not too hot. When it is fall, it is when the leaves turn colors and during winter it is quite cold, and the trees loose their leaves. Since Nagoya is part of the deciduous forest, there are many different types of trees. They include, oaks, maples, shrubs and mosses. Nagoya is pretty flat if you were to calculate the average elevation of the whole city. In fact Nagoya is only in average 183 feet above sea level . The highest point in Nagoya is actually about 650 feet above sea level. This place is called Togoku, Kamishidami, Moriyama-ku, or more commonly known as Mount Togoku. Since it is located quite higher, the temperatures tend to be cooler. The lowest place in Nagoya Japan is only about 6 feet below sea level which is located in Shinchaya 4-chome, Minato-ku. Also from east to west, Nagoya is only about 15 miles and from north and south Nagoya is also about 15 miles. This makes Nagoya almost the shape of a square. In Nagoya, there are not quite a lot of special landforms like mountains and valleys. This is due to the fact that Nagoya is actually located in the rare plains found in Japan. The area there is quite low and is part of the Osaka plain. One of the most visited and famous landform in Nagoya has to be Mount Togoku. It is located in Mt. Togaku Fruits park. Mt. Togoku is located in the northern part of Nagoya. If you want to learn more about Mount Togoku, please click here. One of the biggest earthquakes that happened near Nagoya was a 6.2 magnitude and there was the 8.1 Nankai Earthquake that happened on December 21st, 1946. After the quake, it caused over 2,000 injuries and more than 1300 deaths. If you want to learn more about the Nankai Earthquake. |
