Environmental Issues
There are many environmental issues occurring in the city of Nagoya, Japan throughout the past years. However, they were able to overcome most of them through the help of teamwork, determination, and planning. Nagoya is the third largest city in Japan, along with a few other cities. However, people in Nagoya were still able to decrease the majority of their environmental issues. Although they currently do have environmental issues, they are certainly making slow progress in solving them.
Nagoya’s environmental issues consist of many, many different types of problems. First, they have many water pollution issues. Due to their large supplies of trash, it began to ruin and affect the water. The destruction of woodland areas occur more and more often as well. Between the years 1990 to 2005, there was a huge and sudden decrease in the amount of woodland areas including forests. It approximately went down by 5%. There are also many threatened species and animal problems that have arisen. An environmental issue of theirs was that they had too much carbon dioxide and garbage. To reduce it, they planned to create more of a sustainable lifestyle in Nagoya. As a solution to their pollution and garbage problems, the entire city of Nagoya began recycling many various items, such as soda cans, bottles, and other cans and reduced their trash by placing recycle bins and garbage cans throughout the entire city of Nagoya. This enabled the people of Nagoya to be able to easily throw out their trash properly instead of polluting the city with more trash. In the year of 1998, the city’s garbage was at least 1.02 million tons of garbage! However, through their hard work and consistently recycling, there was only about 720,000 tons of garbage in the year of 2000. The people in Nagoya created a plan known as “The Nagoya Higashiyama Forest Plan.” This was created to restore their woodlands and their original forests that have been ruined to its previous state. The government and many people of Nagoya have been protecting their marsh areas actively. They have also created a zoo, the Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Gardens, where many different types of species, both animals and plants, are being taking care of. At the zoo, they raise many rare species as well including the Persian Leopard. Building and creating the zoo is not only a wonderful site for the people of Nagoya to attend, but it also makes a big contribution in protecting and raising many rare and threatened species. The threatened species in Nagoya include different types of birds, insects, mammals, and vascular plants. These environmental issues can affect Nagoya and its society greatly. Problems that have arisen worsened over time, leading to a situation where people and animals could be harmed. It also affects the society’s lifestyle, if the problem would not be taken care of properly, the situation could be very serious. An example of this situation would be maintaining their water supply. If people were to constantly waste large amounts of Nagoya’s limited water, it would leave Nagoya into a situation where they can barely survive with the low supply of water. In order to maintain their water supply properly, the people of Nagoya would have to use their precious water wisely, and they should supply each household with a specific amount of water to use daily. This way, the people of Nagoya would be able to get used to their new lifestyle with saving and maintaining their water supply. (For more information about solutions for managing Nagoya's water supply, please click here. ) Although there are a lot or have been a lot of environmental issues and problems occurring in Nagoya, they were solved and fixed. Without the teamwork and help from everyone in the city, they would most likely not be able to solve their problems and would eventually worsen. (For more information about the citizens’ teamwork, please click here. ) For example, the help from many people in Nagoya enabled the entire city to become a cleaner and safer city/place to live in. If the people of Nagoya didn't help and take their situation seriously, their amounts of trash and carbon dioxide in the air would lead to disastrous events/situations, causing the residents to abandon and vacate Nagoya. They have also established many sites and buildings just to solve their problems as well, showing their determination in restoring their previous states of their forests and their environment. For example, the people of Nagoya had built the Higashiyama Zoo and the Botanical Gardens as a solution for the protection of their threatened species. |
